Our City – Haifa

Haifa (In Hebrew: חיפה) is the largest city in northern Israel, and the third-largest city in the country, with a population over 265,000. The city is located on the slopes of Mount Carmel nearby the Mediterranean coastline, and has a mixed population of Jews and Arabs.

Haifa is especially known for its deep connection to science and technology. It is home to the only Institute of Technology in Israel – The Technion (הטכניון, est. 1924), which offers a various of undergraduate and graduate studies in natural sciences, engineering, architecture and medicine . Nowadays, there are approximately 12,500 students in the Technion campus. Two Nobale laureates teach there, Avram Hershko and Aaron Ciechanover who won the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering the biological system responsible for disassembling protein in the cell. It has also other notable academic achievements: discovering a Quasicrystal structure, creating the PHP programming language, developing the Lempel-Ziv-Welch algorithm and more.

The first home of the Technion, after relocating to its current campus, is now used as  the Israel National Museum of Science, Technology and Space. The museum has approximately 200,000 visitors annually.
